Random Amnesia, or the Wonders of ext4 Data Loss

In the land of Linux Gnurus tech world, much is made about the wonders of Linux’s various oft-changing file systems. There are many to choose from. So many, that if you randomly pick 3 letters and a number, you will probably find it as a Linux file system.

OpenSUSE: Installing and running

Sometimes words just fail to adequately describe stuff encountered in my recent waterboardings explorations into the world of Linux.

I hereby present my prize winning essay impression of OpenSUSE:

At the behest of KURKOSDR over at TMREPOSITORY, I sat on my ass for over an hour and downloaded PC-BSD (the Freetarded OS that isn’t supposed to be Freetarded). Seriously, it took well over an hour on a 30M connection. Ah well, just a slow server ya know. It has happened before so no sweat.

Mint: KDE get your gun

So, having just installed the KDE version of Mint, I decided to take a test drive around the interweebs. Arriving here at blahg central the Dashboard, I was greeted by this message:

In my foolhardy attempts endeavour to test out Linux as it flounders and flails stands at the present moment in time, I have downloaded and infested my computer with installed several flavors of Linux. I chose to do so using the only sane way to install Linux the virtual machine route, for which I give myself thanks.

Debian: WTF? edition.

There is a reason that Ubuntu–and family–is chosen over the backassward sperm donor father OS of the line: Debian is a nightmare!

Kubuntu, thy name is Frustration or The Further Adventures into Migraines

First off, I am going to start with an update to Java, the Poisoned Fruit. As in all things Linux-y, you just never know what you are going to get from one moment to the next. First it was Java working in Kubuntu and not working in Ubuntu, then for what ever inexplicable reason, it was working in Ubuntu and not in Kubuntu, then the wind shifted directions yet again and it was working in both. Always some kinda shit interesting surprise with these two.

Well I have just had my first “what did I do and how do I unfuck-it-up fix-it moment with Kubuntu. Java. You know, that wonderful little thing that lets you play sometimes amusing mostly low-res games online? Yes that Java. Deciding to go play at one of my favorite sites, I found out I would need to install Java. After mucking around in the ashcans repositories and having no luck narrowing down which one of a couple of hundred libs with Java in the name I needed to install it, I finally turned to my trusty Bing (yes you heard me!) and found the answer in just a couple of clicks: IcedTea.

Okay, to be honest, so far I have spent most of my time playing with Ubuntu since it was the first I installed. Deciding to take Kubuntu out for a tour of the web, I fired up the default browser, Rekonq.

Mind you, in the two main installments of the BFDM, I found myself shocked to actually be saying things that were (begrudgingly) “nice” about these two flavors of Linux. Unfortunately at the moment these are fresh installs with minimal updates to either. In the past, I have had other installs that started out pretty good (hell I had one install of Kubuntu that stayed trouble free for the whole six months… too bad I updated!), but at some point I know deep in my bones one–or most likely both–are gonna crap themselves and become useless no-booting bits of code.
